Handy flux is, in my opinion, one of the best paste fluxes available. I find that brushing the joint you're soldering with flux, then heating the area until the flux becomes viscous and translucent, makes it easier to place the solder pieces with a pick. If you place the solder before heating the metal a bit, the flux can bubble and displace your solder squares. Paste flux will dry out in the jar over time, but mixing in clean water easily solves the problem and doesn't change the properties of the flux, as it will evaporate once heated. (Make sure you use water from a clean source, ie. bottled or filtered water, as any dirt or impurities can keep solder from flowing freely.)
