These suspender buttons are quite simple to install. It is necessary, however, to make a starter hole in the waistband because the post on the button back is too thick and not sharp enough to push through the material on its own.
The instructions delivered with this product indicate that you should "Push the tack through the underside of the garment, put the tack ofter the button and hit the tack firmly with the hammer"
If your hammer blow is not direct, you will bend the tack rendering it useless. Instead, after putting the tack over the button, hold it in place with a large, flat, pin punch and strike the punch instead. A punch which will work is the largest one in the set sold on the Amazon site. See the set here:

Any flat-bottomed chunk of metal will work. Try a 1/4" or 5/16" bolt instead.
I have used these buttons on dress pants by painting the tacks with a color closely matching color, and putting the buttons on the inside of the waistband instead of the outside; this makes the buttons essentially invisible a requirement for dress suspender buttons.
